Terracotta Museum – LA BISBAL D'EMPORDí€

Welcome to the Terracotta Museum.

Craftsman, creator, artist, almost an alchemist, the ceramist of La Bisbal is often the last step in a family of generations dedicated to the ancient work of shaping clay. The Terracotta Museum of La Bisbal d'Empordí is today the only institution in the regions of Girona dedicated to the preservation, conservation and dissemination of the material and cultural heritage linked to ceramics. Whoever visits it will be able to learn about the roots and evolution of this economic activity totally linked to the territory and which is much more than a job. Utilitarian, artistic, experimental, artisanal or industrial forms... you will find everything in the long ceramic history of La Bisbal.

What to see?

Permanent exhibition

The Terracotta building. The building where the museum is located is already a journey to the origins of the industrialization of ceramics. It is one of the oldest ceramic tile factories in La Bisbal d'Empordí. Founded in 1928, it is a reference in the history of this industry, with basins for straining the earth, chimneys, ovens... A series of elements that are integrated into the museum's discourse and that make Terracotta one of the most unique industrial archeology buildings.

Exhibition fund. The permanent exhibition is conceived as a representative sample of the collections held by the Museum, a collection of more than eight thousand pieces including ceramic objects, tools and manufacturing utensils. The exhibition discourse reflects the remarkable weight of the collections of tiles, clay, wall ceramics and decorated and creative ceramics, but also offers other more technical aspects, such as the explanation of the artisanal and industrial production processes of ceramics.
