It is there in El Vendrell where we find the Parish of Sant Salvador, which is the subject of our article today. Cultural visits are part of the vacationer's enjoyment, today we present this one to you.

Would you like to know the history of the Parish of San Salvador del Vendrell?

It starts like this... The beginnings of the old parish (now hermitage) of San Salvador de Mar are not known with certainty.

Your birth:

It is possible that a small Christian community was established made up of farmers and fishermen, since what are today the maritime neighborhoods of Coma-ruga and San Salvador were areas of wetlands and pools of water.

There is documentary evidence of its existence from the 16th century to the 19th century.
Therefore, there were some nuclei, houses or farmhouses scattered throughout the territory and a more populated nucleus in the interior, on top of a hill, with a chapel dedicated to Santa Anna.

Possibly, during the visit, the inhabitants of the territory should express to the bishop the difficulties they had in being able to comply with the Sunday obligation when there were rains, storms or torrents. Furthermore, the wetlands had become unhealthy, were a cause of illness and there was the danger of Saracen pirates. For these reasons, many of the inhabitants had moved inland, up the hill where they felt safer.

Bishop Ponç de Gualba, after seeing the situation in person, understood the request of the faithful and granted them the creation of a new parish, separating it from the original one based on the beach.

The bishop's decision:

By the decree of August 12, 1307, which is preserved in the archive of the archbishopric of Barcelona, in file n.6 proviment of the monastery of Sant Cugat del Vallès, the aforementioned bishop created the two parishes: that of Vendrell under the invocation of San Salvador which was celebrated on November 9 (Dedication of the Basilica of San Juan Laterà or Salvador) and that of San Vicenç de los Calders, which was located in another small center of inhabitants under the protection of its castle.

Of course, the bishop forced the parishioners of Vendrell to go down to the old parish twice a year to pray one answer for the faithful deceased buried there. They had to do it on the Monday of the second Easter and the feast of the dedication of Saint John Laterà, on November 9. And this is what the town of Vendrell has done for many centuries, except for a brief parenthesis in the second half of the XNUMXth century when the hermitage became dependent on the parish of Sant Ramon de Coma-ruga. The celebration of the people's vote was resumed at the initiative of Mn. Josep Maria Barenys who, when reviewing the book of pastoral visits of Vendrell, understood that it was an important festival for the Vendrellan community that had to be reestablished again.

The sister parish of San Vicenç de los Calders.

For a few years it had its own rector, but after the Black Death epidemic that devastated Catalonia at the end of the 14th century, the bishopric of Barcelona ordered the rector of Albinyana to be in charge of the parish, who had the difficulty of crossing the mountain range that separates both populations.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the rector of Albinyana complained that it was too much work for him to take charge of San Vicenç given the distance, and he advised that the rector of Vendrell or some vicar could take care of San Vicenç de los Calders, a position From Vendrell to said town it is only three quarters of the way. This was determined and from now on until God willing, both parishes have become twinned.

The writings:

The parish archive preserves the records of the sacramental books and other very diverse documentation. It is possible to consult the file by requesting permission from those who guard it. Consueta, uses and customs of the parish of San Salvador del Vendrell.

In 2007, the parish published this book that transcribes the uses and customs of the parish that were collected in the consuetes made by six rectors between 1789 and 1904. This book can be obtained by requesting it directly from the parish.
