Vitamin and mineral deficiency in modern society

Today I weigh the abundance of food and treatment and in the midst of the information age there are more and more people who suffer from vitamins and minerals. This is what is known as "the double burden of malnutrition", as explained by the president of the Spanish Nutrition Society (SEN) and professor at the University of Zaragoza, Luis Moreno. Calcium, iron, potassium, vitamins A, D and folic acid are some of the nutrients that, according to nutrition authorities, are scarce in the diet of various segments of the population. However, there are plenty of foods rich in sodium, fats and added sugars.

Vitamin and mineral deficiency

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the problem and warns that the high consumption of beverages or foods rich in added sugars reduces the nutritional quality of the diet, since it provides a considerable amount of energy devoid of nutrients. "This contributes to increasing the prevalence of obesity, hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, the main causes of mortality," explains Nancy Babio, president of the College of Dietitians-Nutritionists of Catalonia (Codinucat).
