The Gardens of Santa Clotilde They are located in a place of great beauty in Lloret de Mar. The gardens belong to the noucentista movement in Catalonia of which Eugeni d'Ors was the spokesperson.
The Gardens of Santa Clotilde, designed in the manner of the ancient gardens, soft and at the same time austere, of the Italian Renaissance, were carried out by Nicolau Rubió i Tudurí at the age of twenty-eight, following the school of his teacher in the art of gardening, Forestier.
Here, Rubió forgets the Hispano-Arabic lesson confused between the images of the French garden that Forestier teaches him through the collaboration in the gardens of Montjuïc, and moves towards the recovery of the Italian Renaissance spirit, as the essence of modernity.
Thanks to its perfect state of preservation, those symmetries, visual concentrations, background arrangements, typical of the Italian garden of the Cinquecento and Seicento, still remain today.
Despite the total autonomy of forms of this garden, some groups of trees or sometimes curtains of trees merge with the entire landscape that surrounds the garden, the strongly marked visual axes, rigorously straight, lead us to the different points of interest, to the end of which are ornamental elements, such as statues or small fountains that try to break in a certain way the uniformity of the layout.
The garden appears to us with mixtures of elements extracted from the Villa Medici, Villa Borghese or perhaps also of the boboli gardens. Florence was the source of inspiration of the moment. The spirit of romanticism is latent throughout the garden, expressed through the marble bust that appears confused among the virgin vineyard, contemplating the sea and with its back to the viewer.
