In the municipal exhibition hall oms house photo exhibition was held 'White Blanches' whose theme has been the snowfalls in Blanes. This exhibition is part of the initiative launched in 2015 by the Blanes Town Hall and the theme is very appropriate for these Christmas parties.
The photographs, films and videos show a compilation of the snowfalls that have been experienced in Blanes during the last century, hence the chosen title: white blanches. You can also see the projection of a musical montage with some of the photographs in the exhibition, as well as others from the Archive Documentary Fund, films and videos.
This exhibition can be visited until January 8 at Casa Oms -ground floor of Calle Ample, 11- from Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 13 p.m. During these days, the room will be closed coinciding with the holidays: December 25 and 26, and January 1 and 6.
The exhibition has been made possible thanks to the collections and collections of images that are preserved in the Municipal Archives, following the publication and it is possible to make a fairly complete tour of the main snowfalls that have whitened the beach, the streets and the most emblematic of the municipality where the Costa Brava begins.
The visitor to the exhibition will go back to those that took place at the beginning of the 20th century. Before the Civil War, in the 30s and 40s, when the Paseo de Mar was dominated by a balustrade and the fishing port was still under construction, it is when one of the most intense is remembered. They also occurred in the 1956s, but the first great frost of the last century took place in 32, which was called "the year of the cold". For two weeks in February, Blanes suffered very low temperatures, so cold that it was when the Iberian Peninsula reached the most extreme recorded so far: negative 12 degrees. It was then that the lowest figure recorded so far was reached in this city on the Costa Brava: negative XNUMX degrees. That same month, accompanying the frosts, it also snowed.
In any case, the most remembered snowfall in Blanes It is that of Christmas 1962, when those who went to Midnight Mass or were awake saw the first snowflakes falling at 11,30:25 p.m. The next day, December XNUMX, Blanes and a large part of Catalonia woke up looking completely white, as it had not happened for many years. Although it has been more than half a century since this snowfall is the most nostalgic and most remembered both in the collective imagination for the special dates on which it fell. The cold and the frosts were repeated in 1985, in which the second most important cold wave of the entire XNUMXth century was suffered. In Blanes negative 10 degrees were recorded at 8 in the morning on January 9, a record figure compared to what usually happens, although not the lowest in the XNUMXth century.
