The spas of Comarruga

The Comarruga spas They are among the best known in the province of Tarragona. There are two areas in Comarruga, the Riuet and the Estany de Comarruga whose waters were declared mineral-medicinal in 1892. Dr. August Pi Sunyer determined in 1919 that, due to their properties, they should be classified as chlorinated alkaline, brominated and almost isotonic thermal waters.

The spas of Comarruga

In 1180 appears the first reference to Comburuga, when the abbot of Sant Cugat granted Arnau Sunyer and Berenguer the alodium called “ipsum vilare de Coma Ruga”, within the terms of the castles of Calders and San Vicente. The concession excepted the Comarruga pond, which remained in the hands of the Sant Cugat Monastery. In 1183 the abbot of Sant Cugat himself granted a charter of population of Vendrell in favor of Bernat de Papiol, in exchange for his commitment to recognize and defend the possessions of the Monastery and the inhabitants of those lands. In 1887 the San Vicente de Calders station was built on land belonging to Comburuga. Throughout the XNUMXth century, the San Vicente station established itself as one of the main railway junctions in Catalonia, giving rise to the establishment of a new neighborhood around it.

In 1892 the spring waters of the pond and the stream (riuet) of Comburuga They were declared mineral-medicinal by opinion of the Royal Academy of Medicine and Surgery of Barcelona. As a result of the discovery of the therapeutic properties of these waters, a spa hotel was built in the 1920s, which marked the beginning of the urbanization of the nucleus of Comburuga, converted over the years into an important tourism and summer resort.

This thermal tradition has led to consolidate the spas of Comburuga as the best-known hotel and tourism establishments in the Tarragona Gold Coast.
